Is PETG Food Safe? The Layered Answer

Is PETG Food Safe?

Why raw PETG is food-safe

PETG is part of the PET family, the same resin used for clear plastic drink bottles. It does not contain BPA, phthalates or other harmful additives in standard food-grade formulations.

Why printed PETG is not

  • FDM prints have microscopic gaps between layers
  • Moisture and food residue collect in those gaps
  • Bacteria colonise the gaps over a few uses
  • Washing does not reach all the gaps

Making printed PETG more food-safe

  • Stainless steel or food-safe nozzle for printing
  • Food-safe epoxy or polyurethane coating on the finished print
  • Accept the print as a single-use item
  • Use injection-moulded food vessels for serious food contact applications
