What is Infill in 3D Printing?

How infill works

3D prints are usually hollow inside, with a pattern (gyroid, grid, triangles, honeycomb) filling the interior to support the top layers and add strength. The percentage controls how dense that pattern is.

Choosing infill

Infill Use
10 percent Decorative pieces, vases (sometimes 0%)
15 to 20 percent Everyday default for visual prints
30 to 40 percent Light functional parts
50 to 60 percent Mechanical brackets, mounts
80 to 100 percent Engineering parts under heavy load

Infill patterns

  • Gyroid: strong in all directions, modern default
  • Cubic: good general strength
  • Triangles: classic, strong
  • Honeycomb: strong, slow to print
  • Lines: fastest, weakest
  • Concentric: matches outer shape, decorative
