3D Printer Hotend Parts Australia
Hotend anatomy
- Nozzle: the tip where filament extrudes
- Heater block: the cube that holds the heater cartridge and thermistor
- Heater cartridge: the heating element itself
- Thermistor: the temperature sensor
- Heatbreak: the throttling tube between the hot zone and cold zone
- Heatsink: the finned cooling area above the heatbreak
- PTFE tube: the filament guide (Bowden) or short liner (direct drive)
What fails first
- Heater cartridges: burn out occasionally after 1000+ hours
- Thermistors: drift or fail, causing thermal runaway errors
- Nozzles: wear with matte and composite filaments
- Heatbreaks: pit and pack with carbonised filament
- PTFE tube: degrades above 240 C, must be all-metal for higher temps
