Best Filament for Lithophanes

Best Filament for Lithophanes

What a lithophane needs from the filament

A lithophane works by varying material thickness so that thick areas block more light and thin areas let more through. The right filament: opaque enough at full thickness to read dark, translucent enough at minimum thickness to read bright, even pigment so brightness varies with thickness rather than colour.

Material picks

Material Use case
White PLA Standard. Best contrast. Default choice.
Translucent PLA Softer look, less dark in the shadows
Clear PETG Brightest when backlit; less detail in mid-tones
Glow-in-the-dark PLA Novelty: glows without backlight

Print orientation

Print vertically, with the image face pointing up or out (not flat on the bed). Vertical printing gives smoother surface detail than flat printing because the layer lines run parallel to the variation, not across it.

Settings for clean lithophanes

  • Layer height 0.08 to 0.12 mm
  • 100 percent infill (any infill pattern shows through)
  • Walls: 1 to 2 (thin walls let the layer detail dominate)
  • Nozzle 0.4 mm or smaller
  • Print slowly: 25 to 40 mm/s
  • Layer fan 100 percent

Mounting and lighting

  • LED panel: best for even lighting
  • Lightbox: works for medium-format lithophanes
  • Window-mount: relies on changing daylight, can look great
  • Tealight: warm tone but uneven
