Silk PLA Buyer's Guide: Solid, Dual and Tri-Colour

How silk PLA gets its shine

Silk PLA is standard PLA with co-polymers and pigment that give the printed surface a glossy, satin-pearl finish. The visual effect is closer to a glazed ceramic than a regular plastic. The trade-off is slightly lower mechanical strength than matte or standard PLA.

Solid, dual and tri-colour

  • Solid silk: one colour throughout, consistent shine
  • Silk dual-colour: two silk strands twisted, colour reads differently from each angle
  • Silk tri-colour: three strands twisted for a deeper gradient effect
  • Silk gradient: colour transitions along the spool length

Print settings

Nozzle slightly hotter than regular PLA (215 to 225 C) helps fully melt the silk co-polymer and brings out maximum shine. Low fan (40 to 70 percent) further boosts gloss but watch for overhangs. Print speed under 60 mm/s gives the best layer fusion and finish.

Best uses

  • Vases, spiralised single-wall prints
  • Unpainted display pieces
  • Decorative containers and homewares
  • Statement pieces where shine matters

Where silk loses

  • Painted miniatures (smooth surface fights paint)
  • Mechanical parts (slightly weaker than matte or standard PLA)
  • Outdoor prints (PLA limitations apply)
