3D Printer Maintenance Basics

Weekly

  • Wipe bed with isopropyl alcohol before each print
  • Brass-brush extruder drive gear teeth (filament dust accumulates)
  • Visual check of belts and pulleys for debris
  • Check filament path for kinks or wear

Monthly

  • Check belt tension (should pluck like a low guitar note)
  • Inspect nozzle for wear or bell-mouthing
  • Clean print bed thoroughly with soap and water
  • Verify bed levelling and Z-offset

Every 6 months

  • Lubricate lead screws (light lithium grease or PTFE)
  • Lubricate linear rails if used
  • Check stepper motor connections
  • Replace worn build sheet if surface is damaged
  • Re-tighten frame bolts
