How Long Does PLA Filament Last in Storage?

How Long Does PLA Filament Last?

What ages PLA in storage

PLA absorbs moisture from air over time. Wet PLA prints with popping sounds, stringing, weak layer adhesion and a dull surface. The chemistry itself does not significantly degrade over years; the print quality drops from moisture absorption.

Storage best practices

  • Original bag plus silica gel, resealed (fine for years)
  • Sealed dry box with bulk silica (fine for years)
  • Active dehumidifier dry box (premium long-term)
  • Avoid leaving spools on the printer for weeks in humid climates

How to know if PLA has gone bad

  • Popping or hissing sounds during printing
  • Stringing that was not there last week
  • Brittle prints that snap at layer lines
  • Dull or rough surface finish

Drying PLA

Filament dryer at 45 to 55 C for 4 to 6 hours brings most PLA back to print-ready. Food dehydrator works. Oven at low temp works if you have a thermometer to verify.
