How Long Does PLA Filament Last?
What ages PLA in storage
PLA absorbs moisture from air over time. Wet PLA prints with popping sounds, stringing, weak layer adhesion and a dull surface. The chemistry itself does not significantly degrade over years; the print quality drops from moisture absorption.
Storage best practices
- Original bag plus silica gel, resealed (fine for years)
- Sealed dry box with bulk silica (fine for years)
- Active dehumidifier dry box (premium long-term)
- Avoid leaving spools on the printer for weeks in humid climates
How to know if PLA has gone bad
- Popping or hissing sounds during printing
- Stringing that was not there last week
- Brittle prints that snap at layer lines
- Dull or rough surface finish
Drying PLA
Filament dryer at 45 to 55 C for 4 to 6 hours brings most PLA back to print-ready. Food dehydrator works. Oven at low temp works if you have a thermometer to verify.
