Can PLA Be Painted?

Can PLA Be Painted?

Painting workflow

  • Sand: 120 to 240 grit to knock down layer lines
  • Filler primer: auto body filler primer fills small gaps
  • Wet sand: 400 to 800 grit between primer coats
  • Base coat: spray or brush, thin coats
  • Detail coats: acrylic for fine work, weathering washes for depth
  • Seal: matte or gloss clear coat to protect the paint

Best PLA for painting

Matte PLA. The mineral-filled surface grips primer immediately and gives an even tooth for paint. Standard glossy PLA fights paint adhesion; silk PLA fights it more (smooth shiny surface).

Paint types that work

  • Acrylic: hobby paint (Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter), most common
  • Enamel: durable, oil-based, longer dry time
  • Spray paint: aerosol cans, faster for large parts
  • Airbrush: thinned acrylic for premium finish
