Matte PLA Filament

About matte PLA filament

Matte PLA is PLA with a flat, low sheen surface. The matte finish scatters light, so layer lines are much harder to see and prints look cleaner straight off the bed. It prints on the same settings as standard PLA, needs no enclosure, and we stock it in 1.75 mm on plastic spools.

Why print matte PLA

A glossy filament shows every layer line because each layer catches the light. Matte PLA does not, so models, figures, props and display parts look smoother without sanding or painting. Colours also read flatter and more even, which photographs well.

Matte PLA lines we carry

We stock more than one matte PLA line, including Matte PLA V2 and Matte PLA V4, plus matte gradient, matte dual colour and matte tri colour rolls. Use the Colour Matcher to find the closest stocked shade to a colour you have in mind.

Matte PLA can string a little more than glossy PLA when it is damp. Keep it dry and use the slicer profiles as a starting point.

Common questions

What is the difference between matte PLA and normal PLA?

Matte PLA has a flat, non reflective finish and normal PLA has a slight gloss. The matte surface hides layer lines and small print flaws. Matte PLA prints on the same temperatures as normal PLA, though parts are usually a little less stiff between layers.

Does matte PLA hide layer lines?

Matte PLA hides layer lines better than any glossy PLA. The flat surface scatters light instead of reflecting it, so the ridges between layers do not catch the eye. Matte PLA is a common choice for models and display pieces for that reason.

Is matte PLA weaker than regular PLA?

Matte PLA is slightly weaker between layers than regular PLA because of the additive that creates the matte finish. For models, props, organisers and most everyday parts the difference does not matter. For load bearing parts use PLA+, PETG or an engineering material.
