Prototype before you cast

Before committing to a casting in silver or gold, print the design in PLA at 0.08 to 0.12 mm layers. See the design at scale, refine ergonomics, check sizing on the wearer. Save the cost of a botched cast.

Lost-PLA casting workflow

PLA can be used as a sacrificial pattern for sand or investment casting. The PLA burns out cleanly in the kiln (similar to lost-wax) leaving a clean mould cavity. Best with simple geometries; complex undercuts can trap ash. Print at high infill and low layer height for cleanest surface.

Print-and-wear jewellery

  • Silk gold PLA: looks like solid gold under indoor light
  • Silk silver PLA: clean metallic silver
  • Brass-fill PLA (Protopasta): polishable to a real brass finish
  • Copper-fill PLA: similar workflow
  • Matte black PLA: minimalist modern pieces
  • Translucent PLA: subtle wearable design accents

Print settings for jewellery scale

  • Layer height 0.08 mm or 0.12 mm
  • Nozzle 0.25 mm or 0.4 mm
  • Print slowly (20 to 40 mm/s)
  • Tree supports or organic supports save the most cleanup
