Best Filament for Vase Mode 3D Printing
Why some filaments shine in vase mode
Vase mode prints a single continuous wall in one spiral motion. There is no infill, no top layer, no internal structure, just the outside surface. That makes the filament's visual character (gloss, gradient, translucency) the dominant feature of the finished print.
Top picks
- Silk PLA: glossy pearlescent finish reads beautifully on curves
- Gradient PLA: colour transitions wrap around the vase as it prints
- Silk gradient: combines both effects
- Translucent PLA: backlit or sun-lit vases glow
- Translucent PETG: clearer than PLA, better for light shades
- Sparkle gradient: glitter + colour change for statement pieces
Vase mode print settings
- Layer height: 0.2 to 0.3 mm (thicker layers for stronger walls)
- Line width: 0.6 to 1.2 mm
- Bottom layers: 3 to 5
- Print speed: 30 to 60 mm/s
- Outer perimeters: 1 (vase mode requires single perimeter)
