Multi-Material 3D Printing Filament Australia
Multi-material setups
- Prusa MMU3: up to 5 colours in one print on a Prusa MK4 / MK4S
- Prusa XL multi-tool: up to 5 toolheads, each with a different filament
- Voron multi-extruder builds: custom setups
- IDEX printers: two independent toolheads
Filament considerations
- Same brand and same material family for cleanest colour swaps (e.g., all Prusament PLA)
- Matched diameter tolerance prevents extrusion inconsistency across colours
- Soluble supports (PVB for water-based, PVA where available) for complex overhangs
- Hard-soft combos: PLA + TPU 95A for prints with rigid bodies and flexible parts
Tips for clean multi-colour prints
- Prime towers cost filament; size them appropriately
- Wipe towers / purge volumes need tuning per colour change
- Slow first layer of every colour swap
- Test with simple prints first before complex multi-colour models
