Is PLA Biodegradable?
What the marketing says
PLA is plant-derived, often called bioplastic or biodegradable. Both descriptions are technically true: PLA is made from plant starch, and PLA will eventually degrade given the right conditions.
What actually happens in the real world
- In an industrial compost facility (60 C with active microbes): breaks down in months
- In a backyard compost (ambient temp): persists for years to decades
- In landfill: persists for decades
- In the ocean: persists for decades
- Burned (which is what should not happen): releases CO2 and trace compounds
The honest disposal advice
- Treat PLA as recyclable plastic, not as compostable
- Some councils accept PLA in plastic recycling, many do not, check locally
- Save failed prints in a bag for future recycling streams
- Print right the first time: the best waste reduction is not making waste
