Matte vs Silk PLA: Which Finish to Pick

Matte vs Silk PLA: Which Finish to Pick

How they look

  • Matte PLA: low sheen, soft texture, layer lines visually broken up by mineral filler
  • Silk PLA: high gloss, pearlescent, layer lines visible but flattering under the shine

How they print

Property Matte PLA Silk PLA
Nozzle temp 200 to 220 C 215 to 225 C
Bed temp 50 to 60 C 50 to 60 C
Layer fan 100 percent 40 to 70 percent
Nozzle wear Slightly abrasive (mineral filler) Standard
Strength Similar to standard PLA Slightly lower

Paintability

Matte takes paint and primer beautifully. The mineral-filled surface gives an even tooth that primer grips immediately. Silk fights paint: the glossy surface needs sanding or a special adhesion primer to take colour evenly.

Which to pick by project

Project Pick
Painted miniatures Matte
D&D terrain Matte (or standard)
Unpainted display piece Silk
Vase, planter, decor Silk
Cosplay (paintable) Matte
Functional tool (no aesthetic) Matte or standard (matte hides marks)
Photographs well unpainted Silk
Photographs well with paint Matte

Both together

A common trick: print the main body in matte, then accent pieces in silk. Matte armour with silk gold trim. Matte tabletop terrain with silk water effects. The contrast plays well visually.
